When most travelers visit K’gari (Fraser Island), they hop off the ferry at Kingfisher Bay or Wanggoolba Creek and head straight to the well-known sights on the island’s eastern side such as Eli Creek, Lake McKenzie, the Maheno shipwreck, and 75 Mile Beach. But what if we told you that the true hidden gem of K’gari lies on the remote and untouched western side?
The Road Less Travelled
Unlike the eastern side, which is easily accessed via ferry, reaching K’gari’s western shores requires a bit more effort, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. If you’re driving from the ferry landing at Kingfisher Bay, expect a rough 5-hour 4WD trek through sand tracks and dense rainforest before you reach the secluded western beaches. This journey isn’t for the faint-hearted, and for most visitors, the logistics make it difficult to explore the west by land.
Luckily for us, we travel via Catamaran from Hervey Bay. So no ferries, and definitely no long days of driving. Just cruising on over in luxury with morning tea in hand, pulling up and making our way onto the deserted beaches via our iconic amphibious vessel, sealegs.

A Secluded Paradise Awaits
If you want to experience K’gari away from the crowds, the western side is where you need to be. This untouched stretch of coastline is home to crystal-clear waters, remote beaches, and incredible marine life. Unlike the churning waves of 75 Mile Beach, the western side boasts calm, glassy waters perfect for swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and of course, tube rides!
From towering sand dunes to hidden creeks, the landscape here remains largely unchanged by tourism, making it one of the most authentic wilderness experiences on K’gari. In fact, the locations that we visit, we're the only tour operator who has a permit for them. Which means you won't be fighting for your perfect instagram shot.
The Best Way to Experience the Western Side

You’ll get to kayak, snorkel, hike, and explore places most visitors never get to see—all with the comfort of an experienced guide leading the way.

Is the Western Side Worth It? Absolutely.
If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-track adventure, the western side of K’gari delivers. You’ll find the island’s most unspoiled beauty, rich wildlife, and complete tranquility—a side of K’gari that few visitors ever experience.
So, are you ready to escape the crowds and discover the wild, untouched magic of K’gari’s western coast?
